Global Forum on Development: The power of 4 billion - Inclusive Agendas for Women and Youth (Paris, 5 April 2018)

Of the world’s 7.6 billion people, more than 4 billion are at a disadvantage in terms of health, education or economic opportunities only because they are young, a woman or both. The 2018 Global Forum on Development took stock of the progress to date, and debate how policies can keep the promise of unleashing the power of women and youth as critical agents of change. During the Forum, high-level representatives from governments, businesses, foundations and international organisations, met and shared ideas on concrete ways to achieve greater prosperity for all. We specifically discussed solutions to the challenges of including youth in development processes, creating decent jobs for rural youth, recognising and reducing women’s unpaid care and domestic work, and understanding the links between gender inequality and conflict or fragile contexts.

Side-event at the 71st session of the UN General Assembly (New York, 22 September 2016)

The side-event New coalitions for SDG 5: philanthropic support for realising women’s and girls’ rights identifyed innovative ways to maximise philanthropic and public actors’ contributions to the financing, measurement and policy implementation of SDG 5 and the other gender equality targets of the SDGs. Philanthropic foundations’ flexibility, capacity for innovation and connections with grassroots women’s organisations make them a valuable ally for governments of the South and North. Multi-stakeholder coalitions that involve foundations can help move beyond traditional advocacy between donors and recipients, by exploring innovative tools and coalitions to address the challenges of implementing the SDG’s gender equality commitments. Establishing “what works” for effective implementation of the SDGs will be at the heart of a new policy dialogue to be launched by the OECD’s gender and development cluster.
