Assessment of chemicals

Hazard Assessment

The PRogramme

The OECD works with member countries and other stakeholders to cooperatively assess the hazards of industrial chemicals. This generates OECD-agreed assessments that are available to the public, and that can be used for priority setting, risk assessment and other activities within national or regional programmes. This co-operative work allows member countries and the chemical industry to share the burden of evaluating chemicals and avoid duplication.

Therefore, increaseing efficiencies, decreasing costs and minimising the need for animal testing. As part of this work, member countries work together to improve and harmonise chemical assessment methods using the most current science. These include integrated approaches to testing and assessment and (quantitative) structure activity relationships, or (Q)SARs.
