AustraliaAustralian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is the Australian Government regulator of agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemical products.

For an agvet chemical product to legally be manufactured, imported, supplied, sold or used in Australia, it must be registered by the APVMA—unless exempt by the Agvet Code. The registration process involves scientifically evaluating the safety, efficacy (effectiveness) and trade risks of a product in order to protect the health and safety of people, animals, plants and the environment.

Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) is responsible for regulating pest control products manufactured, imported into, sold or used in Canada and for ensuring that pesticides can be used safely, are effective and have value without causing unreasonable adverse effects to human health or the environment. The Pest Control Products Act (PCPA) and Regulations govern the regulation and registration of pesticides in Canada. PMRA enforces compliance with the PCPA by developing and implementing an annual National Pesticide Compliance Program.

PMRA accomplishes this role, in collaboration with a network of Health Canada regional offices including inspectors across the country, and in cooperation with provincial and territorial governments and other federal departments and agencies. A PMRA compliance laboratory provides analytical support services to compliance monitoring and investigation activities.
